From the 5th to the 7th century, Asuka served as the political, spiritual, and cultural heart of ancient Japan, shaping the foundations of what the country would become.

It is the birthplace of Prince Shotoku (574–622), a legendary statesman who championed Buddhism and laid the groundwork for a centralized government.

Asuka also witnessed the Taika Reforms in 645 AD—Japan’s first major political transformation, modeled after Chinese systems, which established the emperor-led state.

Even the very terms “Japan” and “Emperor” originated during this groundbreaking era.

Today, Asuka retains its deep historical atmosphere with ancient burial mounds, temple ruins, mysterious stone monuments, and traditional rural scenery.

Uniquely, the entire village is protected under the “Asuka Law”, a national preservation act that safeguards both archaeological heritage and landscape.

Modern buildings—like shops and public facilities—must follow traditional Japanese design standards, preserving the village’s timeless character.
