Located in the beautiful countryside of southern Nara Prefecture, Asuka Village is more than a scenic destination—it is Japan’s first capital and the birthplace of the nation’s identity.

From the 5th to the 7th century, Asuka served as the political, spiritual, and cultural heart of ancient Japan, shaping the foundations of what the country would become.

It is the birthplace of Prince Shotoku (574–622), a legendary statesman who championed Buddhism and laid the groundwork for a centralized government.

Asuka also witnessed the Taika Reforms in 645 AD—Japan’s first major political transformation, modeled after Chinese systems, which established the emperor-led state.

Even the very terms “Japan” and “Emperor” originated during this groundbreaking era.
