Wear the Empress: An Ancient Court Attire & Portrait Experience
This program elevates ancient costume photography beyond a simple dress-up experience. Participants first don meticulously prepared court attire inspired by garments believed to have been worn by empresses and aristocratic women of the Asuka period. Particular care is given not only to the garments themselves, but to posture, layering, and gesture. The inspiration draws in part from the mural paintings of 高松塚古墳, where female figures in ancient attire offer rare visual references to clothing from 1,400 years ago. A professional photographer then captures portraits against the authentic landscapes and historical sites of Asuka — not in a studio. The interplay of light, fabric, and stone transforms the images into works of art rather than simple travel records. The experience continues beyond photography. Local women involved in preserving the tradition, along with guides dressed in ancient attire, introduce related historical sites and burial mounds. Through this exchange, guests gain insight into how women of the ancient court lived, dressed, and expressed aesthetic values. The resulting portrait becomes more than an image — it becomes a story. For DMC partners, this is a high-value, place-specific program that does not compete with conventional Kyoto or Nara City offerings. The tangible output — fine-art portraits — makes it particularly compelling and easy to position for international luxury markets.
