Experience authentic Japanese food and culture in the birthplace of Japan

Experience authentic Japanese food and culture in the birthplace of Japan

Plan Overview

Asuka Village, located in south-central Nara Prefecture, has immense historical significance as the first capital of Japan. It flourished from the 5th to 7th centuries A.D. and was a center of political power, artistic expression, and religious development. The village is also a treasure trove of ancient cultural heritage, including ancient tombs, temples, and ruins, and is known as the birthplace of Japan, located in a picturesque mountainous region with spectacular natural scenery.

One of its unique features is that the entire village is designated as a special exception to the Ancient Capital Preservation Law (a law called the Asuka Law), which preserves its historical heritage, satoyama and natural scenery. (This is the only place in Japan where the historical climate is preserved over such a wide area as the entire village.) The materials used for houses, convenience stores, banks, post offices, schools, and other buildings are designated for their tiled roofs and other materials, and the beautiful scenery unique to old Japan can be seen.
Enjoy a two-day stay in the birthplace of Japan, where you will be able to experience the food and traditions of the past and spend time with all five senses.

This plan is a 2-day/1-night package tour to experience history, nature, and food in Asuka Village through your stay. It is a combination of the following 5 contents.

Course Details

Rice is the cornerstone of Japanese food culture and has been a staple for thousands of years, with its preparation and serving methods evolving over time. While modern rice cookers and innovative ingredients are commonplace, you can explore cooking practices from times of yore in this experience at Japan’s old capital of Asuka, Nara, a place that still preserves and upholds many of the country’s ancient traditions.
You’ll learn about the role rice has played throughout Japanese history and be introduced to red rice, an ancient rice variety that has nourished the nation for over 1500 years. You’ll also learn to cook it in an earthenware pot until pillowy soft, guided by a knowledgeable and friendly local host.
While the rice gently puffs away with steam, you’ll head to a soy sauce brewery with over 100 years of history. Step inside to the rich scent of soy sauce as you tour the facility to see the unchanged traditional process of making soy sauce before pressing soy sauce yourself with guidance from real brewers.
Dressed in kurabito-style clothing, you’ll step into the shoes of a real soy sauce brewer as you hand-press soy sauce from the mash, bottle the soy sauce and add your very own label. Before leaving the brewery, try some creamy, mellow tofu from a local shop, served with umami-rich soy sauce — a classic combination.
Next, it’ll be time to make onigiri rice balls. Your host will assist you in shaping the onigiri triangles, brushing them in soy sauce and grilling them to the perfect char. You’ll end the onigiri cooking class in Nara by tasting your onigiri with your hand-pressed soy sauce. This simple yet comforting artisanal meal invites you to savor Japanese cuisine just as it was experienced centuries ago.

Asuka-nabe is a local hot pot dishes of the Asuka region of Nara Prefecture, made by simmering chicken and vegetables in milk and broth. It is rich in calcium and features a milk broth that enhances the umami of the chicken and vegetables. Asuka nabe originated in the Asuka period, when a messenger from Tang China came to Nara and presented a dairy product similar to condensed milk to Emperor Kotoku. At that time, it was the drink of the nobility, but monks also began to drink it in secret, and it is said to have originated when they boiled the meat of their chickens in milk and ate it.
